Last week, Long Beach Council members Al Austin and Suzie Price authored an article in the Long Beach Press-Telegram giving their excuses as to why they didn’t vote to protect city hotel workers from physical and sexual abuse. As one of the hotel workers that advocated for the passage of this ordinance and was present the night of the vote, I am appalled at their blatant lack of concern for the safety of some of the most vulnerable workers in our city.
As both a city resident and hotel worker, I expected more from our elected officials, especially Councilman Al Austin, who has dedicated his career towards working to improve the lives of working families. During the city council meeting, I was furious that Council members Price and Austin heard testimony from myself and my fellow coworkers who have gone through sexual and physical abuse and yet still chose to look the other way.
